The Staff Team

Literacy Volunteers has a Staff Team of 7, which looks after approximately 320 Volunteers and some 159 schools and helps, on average, 1200 children per week.

Richard Wray, the Service Director, is responsible for all aspects of the Charity on a day-to-day basis. He reports to the Board of Trustees (elected from Members) and also makes recommendations on policies and prepares reports for them.  Part of his role also includes the negotiation of funding arrangements with both City and County Councils and other funding bodies.

Karen Ballinger is our Administrator and Richard’s deputy.  Karen provides the first point of office contact for all Volunteers and schools and is invaluable to the smooth running of Literacy Volunteers in the many varied tasks and duties she performs in her role.

Emma Collis is our Area Co-ordinator for the City. Emma joined us a year ago and has received a thorough training for her new role.  She is also fully aware of the current situation in primary schools, having three children of that age.  She is very keen to develop her new area and bring to an increasing number of children the joys that reading and communicating can bring.

Emma Trowbridge joined us in July and has taken over the post of Clerical Assistant/Trainee Area Co-ordinator following the promotion of Emma Collis to Area Co-ordinator (City). Emma T’s first responsibility will be to help Karen with the administration of the Charity and then to be trained as an AC to support Emma C in the City.  Emma T has two children, one of primary school age, the other started secondary school in September 2008 so she is well aware of the current educational practices.
