Literacy Volunteers help children to enjoy reading and communicating.
They help primary aged children in schools. They do not teach reading. Instead they help on a one-to-one basis with children to give them confidence in their reading and communication skills through conversation, reading, writing and playing games.
Volunteers must:
Like children
Enjoy reading and communicating
Be patient, flexible and reliable
Be aged 18 - 80
Volunteers:
Go to the same school regularly for one or more sessions each week
Help children on an individual basis
Help the same children each week
Talk, read, play games, draw and write with their children
Enjoy their time with the children and make sure that the children enjoy the sessions too
Volunteers are provided with:
Training
On going support from an Area Co-ordinator
Books, games and other resources to use with their children
Travelling expenses
